There has been a long history of unfair practices in municipal elections, particularly in small communities. However, efforts have been made over the past 15 years to bring attention to these issues and to improve legislation and public awareness.

Rocky View County now offers an Official Scrutineering School, and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs has mandated the use of voter lists in municipal elections.
